Scottish Ecclesiastical Heraldry: Religious Houses, Universities, Moderators
by Dr David M. Bertie

The Heraldry Society of Scotland is pleased to announce the publication of Scottish Ecclesiastical Heraldry: Religious Houses, Universities, Moderators, with financial support from the Strathmartine Trust. This book complements The Heraldry of the Bishops of Scotland and The Heraldry of the Ecclesiastical Deans of Scotland (published by the Society in 2018 and 2021, respectively). The three books together cover the heraldry of all the senior Scottish clergy from the late thirteenth century up to the present day. This new book covers the abbots, priors and prioresses of the religious houses, the provosts of the collegiate churches, the university principals (who were clerics until the nineteenth century), and the Moderators of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Appendixes deal with the arms of the modern Roman Catholic abbeys and the arms of the ancient Scottish universities. A further appendix provides details of bishops’ and deans’ arms that have come to light since the publication of the two previous books. The book follows the same format as the Bishops and Deans books, providing details of seals, discussion of family background and heraldry and brief descriptions of clerical career, as well as illustrations of armorial carvings, bookplates, stained glass, etc. The recent recataloguing of the Lyon Office seal collection has allowed the inclusion of many images of seals. Over 400 individuals are included in this work which will be a limited edition. The volume is A4 size, hardbound, 395 pages long, with full colour illustrations and continues the series of publications by the Society.

The price for members of the Heraldry Society of Scotland is £35, plus postage & packing; the price for non-members is £40, plus postage & packing.
